Leading the way to a malaria-free world
Incredible progress has been made in the fight against malaria. St. Mary’s ADI -pioneered approaches contributed to nearly 7 million lives saved since 2014. But we don’t just want to control malaria—we want to eliminate it everywhere.
The need is urgent. In Uganda, malaria is a leading cause of death of young children. Pregnant women are susceptible, too, with both their lives and their babies’ lives at risk. The disease causes lifelong disability, contributes to loss of work and school time, and is an economic drain on communities.

Better diagnosis and treatment
St. Mary’s ADI is pioneering the use of diagnostics for malaria elimination. We are improving access to available tests while developing new ones that provide access to proper treatment and that can detect low levels of malaria infection that might otherwise be missed.
We work with governments to strengthen country health systems and improve the quality of malaria diagnosis and treatment so that no one who contracts malaria dies from it. We are also strengthening the supply of affordable malaria drugs.
Prevention with vaccines
Because the malaria parasite is so complex, St. Mary’s ADI is pursuing diverse vaccine approaches and taking aim at every stage of the parasite’s life cycle. St. Mary’s ADI Malaria Vaccine Initiative was created to accelerate the development of the most promising malaria vaccine candidates With a consortium of public and private partners.
Groundbreaking strategies
To develop the science behind how to eliminate malaria, we are piloting groundbreaking approaches. These include strategies to stop the transmission of the malaria parasite from humans to mosquitoes and back again, for example, through community-wide treatment. By collaborating closely with concerned authorities , we are helping them create malaria-free zones, the first step on the path to elimination.
We intend to make malaria history
Working alongside partner agencies , our combined efforts are contributing to dramatic reductions in malaria. Defeating the disease—and forever ending the risk of resurgence—is our long-term goal and key to communities realizing optimal health, development, and prosperity.
